Favourite Childhood Memory: Friday Carnival
Posted by southoftherivermum on March 4th, 2011. Filed under: Childhood Memories, Places to go.I think that my favourite childhood memory is going on holiday when I was about 11 to Canada. My younger brother stayed at home as he was too little so I went with my mum and dad and two older sisters. Activity holidays feature highly in my favourite memories. I think that is because you are together and often trying something for the first time.
The Canadian landscape is obviously beautiful and I loved taking a train through the Rocky Mountain sitting up in the observation car but I really loved the trail riding near Lake Louise. I’d done a bit of riding but I wasn’t that confident at it back home. However these horses were so easy and well trained so you just got to enjoy the ride. We trotted through streams and through stunning countryside. We all laughed at my dad who had never ridden before but was so keen that he went on a 4 hour ride up to the glacier with my eldest sister, who was quite a good rider! We went looking for bears (thankfully didn’t find any) and stayed in a ‘shack’ (I’m sure it wasn’t really) which made us feel as though we were deep in the country.
We arrived at one lodge one evening and we were told that we could go salmon fishing that night. Everyone was tired after our journey but I was allowed to go fishing with my dad. We caught three big salmon and I was so pleased with myself! A great holiday. I wrote a diary while on holiday and stuck in everything from menus and wine labels to postcards, stamps and leaflets. I still have the diary and love looking at it.
I look forward to taking my three kids there when they are a little older. I will try to dig out some photos from my diary and upload them.

I’m not mad keen on horses but I think I would love a holiday like that, it sounds magical!

I loved keeping holiday diaries as a child and sticking in all sorts of random stuff! I don’t think any of them actually survived but I do have some treasures that I encouraged my own kids to contribute to on holidays when they were younger… and I can do it all again when my youngest two are a little older.
